The birth day of Lord Ganesh is known as
Ganesh Chathurthi or Vinayaka Chathurthi. Vinayaka Chathurthi is one of the
most important popular Hindu Festival in India and around the world.
Ganesh Chathurthi falls on the fourth day
after the new moon in Hindu Month of Bhadrapada (in
Avani Tamil month) i.e. in August or September.
Lord Ganesh is the god of good beginnings,
prosperity and obstacle remover.
Lord Ganesh will be the first God in each
and every prayer or yagam or any auspicious ceremonies performed.
Lord Ganesh is very simple and available in
each and every corner, street, road, tank, pond, river banks, and open spaces. Lord Ganesh is also available below the Bodhi Satva Tree (Ficus religiosa L) in Tamil Arasamaram (அரசமரம்). Lakhs of Ganesh statues are
installed in various public places in India and in Hindu Temples and community
centers marriage halls and offices and factories and shopping complexes around
the world. There is no need to enter into a temple to pray
Lord Ganesh.
When entering into Hindu temple the very
first God visible in the Temple will be Lord Ganesh with elephant head and the
first prayer will be to Lord Ganesh and then only to other Gods. Lord Ganesh have big head (elephant) to think big and big ears to listen more, small eyes for concentration, one tusk to retain good and throw away bad, small mouth which represents talk less, trunk (nose) for high efficiency and adaptability. Lord Ganesh have larger stomach which is peacefully digesting all good and bad in life, blessing hands. Lord Ganesh is having rope i.e. Sacred thread commonly known as asyagnopavit which attracts devotees nearer to the highest goal.
The Deity of elephant headed Lord Ganesh is
available in clay, marble, granite, spadikam, vellerukku wood, sandal wood, teak wood, brass, copper,
silver and also in Gold. Lord Ganesh
will be made available by turmeric powder or even cow’s dung at the time of any
auspicious ceremony or yagam performed and the first prayer is only to Lord Ganesh.
Lord Ganesh is very simple and just grass
garland is enough to perform pooja and no flower garlands is necessary. The fruits available in all seasons are
enough to perform pooja to Lord Ganesh.
Modak is prepared and eaten during the
festival. Modak is a sweet prepared using rice floor stuffed with grated jaggery,
coconut and dry fruits. The outer layer of modak is made of rice floor which is white in color with salt and the inner one is made of grated jaggery, coconut and dry fruits. The one and only prasadam which contains sweet (inside) and salt (outside) is modak.
Ganesh Chathurthi is celebrated in
Maharashtra, Gujarat and Chattisgarh as public event and in Goa, Karnataka,
Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh the Ganesh Chathurthi
is celebrated in Homes with family members.
